Technology concept

Many Research and Development projects  are in place, planning of which involves all departments of the company. Our goal is a steady optimisation of our customers' processes

We concentrate our R&D-activities on materials, product and process development.


Since the company's foundation back in 1908, our materials and processes have been continously developed. Here follows an overview of our most recent projects:

  • Stahlnetz - Efficient manufacturing of components made from high strength steel
  • Future Roll – Quenching unit for flexible hardening of future roll generations
  • IWAS - Galvanically induced hydrogen embrittlement of forged cold rolls
  • HEROLL – Hydrogen embrittlement of cold rolls
  • DGM Arbeitskreis Walzplattieren – Provision of advice, and supply of rolls for a rolling mill for testing purposes
  • Evaluation of inclusion size distribution and its influence on the fatigue resistance of high strength steel materials
  • Development of a new steel grade for cold rolls. Autofunded project for the new development of a tool steel with very homogenous microstructure avoiding coagulation of carbides in spite of a chromium content of 10%
  • Development of a gas fired furnace for very quick and energy efficient heating of forged rolls
  • Determination of surface stresses in rolls using ultrasonics
  • Cryogenic treatment of DHQ4 (ESR) rolls. Autofunded project to improve microstructure upon sub zero quenching
  • Simulation of hardening processes in rolls. Several autofunded projects for improvement of roll properties through heat treatment optimisation
  • Very long HIP (hot isostatic pressure) roll. International patent PCT/EP2015/063733. Concept for manufacturing of larger size compound powder metallurgy rolls
  • Manufacturing of a forged section roll with improved performance vs. standard cast steel rolls allowing improved throughput through reduction of the number of passes based on higher load resistance. Autofunded project for entry into a new market segment


We are a co-organiser of the 'Cold Rolling Day', an important conference in the rolling industry and we maintain intensive contact to rolling plants, rolling mill manufacturers and research institutions. We exchange information about the technological state of the art and on R&D-projects, eventually generating ideas for future projects. Additionally, we present the results of our R&D-efforts through other channels.
